What Size Should I Buy?

"What size should I buy for my child?" is one of my most commonly asked questions! I understand that looking at numbers on the size chart is not always helpful, especially for those buying as a gift for someone else's child and don't know their stats, so please see below to see how different sizes fit the same child. But first, a few notes:

  • Generally, Take My Hand runs true to size. If ever in doubt, a good rule of thumb is to size up. If it doesn't fit right away, your child will grow into it before long, and you can always cuff the sleeves/legs for a little while.
  • I know a lot of customers have been trained to expect baby clothes that run super large. I call this "baby vanity sizing" and I don't do this for two reasons. One, because there are regulations in the USA about how children's sleepwear must fit, and being in compliance is important. Because I manufacture in the USA, I do not have the option of being out of compliance. The other reason I don't do this is because I think it's disingenuous to market an item of clothing as fitting "forever" when really, it's just made too large.
  • That said, I have selected modal with the "magic stretch," we get a ton of wear out of every size.
  • Because the fabric is so stretchy, but it can't ever be longer than it is, height is more of a limiting factor than weight.

Zip Rompers

In these photos, Sunny is 2 years and 1 month old. She is 35 inches tall (80th percentile) and weighs 27 pounds (70th percentile). The size 9-12m is too short on her and I've packed them away. I'm okay with that; we got a lot of wear out of them. She has about maxed out size 12-18m, but I haven't packed them away yet because she still reaches for them and likes them. The size 18-24m is a perfect fit with a bit of room to grow. The size 2T toddler set is a bit big on her with a lot of room to grow.

Toddler Lounge Sets

In these photos, Lucy is 4.5 years old. She is petite for age; she weighs 29 pounds (6th percentile) and is 40" tall (30th percentile). The 3T still fits her but she has just about maxed it out in terms of length. She has a lot of room to grow in the 4T. Lucy is still comfortable and happy wearing 3T, so I haven't packed them away yet, but all the new jammies I'm giving her are size 4T.

Baby Ballerina Dresses

In these photos, Sunny is 2 years and 1 month old. She is 35 inches tall (80th percentile) and weighs 27 pounds (70th percentile). She is still reaching for and loving her size 9-12m dresses, even though it's a bit of a mini dress on her. It looks cute and she is happy and comfortable, so I haven't packed them away just yet. She's been wearing this size dress for over a year. The size 12-18m dress fits her well. The size 18-24m is a perfect fit with a bit of room to grow.
